António Costa conveys “the EU’s full solidarity with the people of Ceuta” to Pedro Sánchez

Eduardo González The President of the European Council, António Costa, was received this Thursday in Madrid by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to whom he conveyed “the EU’s full solidarity with the people of Ceuta.” For his part, the Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for his “unwavering solidarity and support for Ceuta and the European Union’s southern border.” Costa arrived in Madrid this Thursday as part of a tour of European capitals to address shared priorities, strengthen cooperation, and contribute to shaping the EU agenda for the coming months. The tour began on August 25 in Slovakia and continued in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic during the first week; and in Luxembourg, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, and Slovenia during the second week. The third week of the tour began on September 9 in Poland and includes Germany, Malta, Spain, Portugal, and Finland, where the trip will conclude on September 17. “Thank you, President of the European Council, for your solidarity and unwavering support for Ceuta and the European Union's southern border,” Sánchez wrote on social media after his meeting with Costa, which took place at the Moncloa Complex. “Europe needs ambitious budgets, commensurate with the challenges we face, that invest in innovation and climate resilience, without neglecting cohesion across the entire territory and the protection of agriculture and fisheries,” he continued. “Let's take a step forward; let's think and invest together as Europeans. We need more Europe,” he concluded. “Excellent meeting with Pedro Sánchez in Madrid during my tour of capital cities,” António Costa posted on social media. “Europe needs strong economies, like Spain's, to strengthen its strategic autonomy,” he continued. “The next European budget must serve to strengthen our competitiveness, while reflecting our firm commitment to defense and security, without neglecting agricultural and cohesion policies,” he added, echoing the Spanish president. “Time is of the essence. We must reach an agreement by the end of the year,” he warned. “In our meeting, I reiterated the EU’s full solidarity with Spain and, in particular, with the people of Ceuta in the face of the exceptional crisis they are experiencing,” Costa affirmed. “What has happened reminds us once again that Europe’s borders will only be secure if all our borders are secure,” he concluded.
