Spain condemns Iranian attacks on a US base in Jordan

The Diplomat The Spanish government condemned on Friday the missile attacks carried out by Iran against Jordanian territory and warned that these actions “increase the risk of escalation in the region and constitute a flagrant violation of international law.” In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spain “expresses its full solidarity with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, its government, and its people, and reiterates its firmest support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security.” “These attacks,” the statement continues, “increase the risk of escalation in the region and constitute a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.” Therefore, Spain “calls for a cessation of violence” and warns that “only negotiation and diplomacy will guarantee lasting peace and stability in the region.” The Iranian Revolutionary Guard carried out a missile attack this week against an aircraft maintenance and repair center at the U.S. military base in Muwaffaq Salti, near Al Azraq, in eastern Jordan. Jordanian authorities confirmed the launch of approximately 20 missiles from Iran, 18 of which were intercepted before reaching their targets, while two landed in an unpopulated area. The attack caused no casualties. The U.S. military stated that the Iranian attack damaged approximately 10 U.S. military aircraft. The Iranian attack came after the United States reported the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for two attacks by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against a U.S. Navy warship.
