European Parliament will send an official mission to Ceuta

Aquí Europa/The Diplomat The coordinators of the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions approved on Thursday, despite opposition from the Social Democrats, the dispatch of a delegation to Ceuta from February 22 to 25, 2027, to investigate on-site the mass influx of migrants recorded on July 30 and 31 and to prepare a report with their findings. The Committee on Petitions, responsible for examining complaints and requests submitted by citizens to the European Parliament, has received five petitions related to Ceuta, according to a statement from Vox. The agreement reached on Thursday includes a debate on the afternoon of September 28 and a mission to Ceuta from February 22 to 25. The initiative, promoted by the People's Party (PP) and Vox, also had the support of the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) and European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) groups, while the Social Democrats voted against it. According to Vox, the MEPs will be able to "learn firsthand what happened" and "listen to those affected" with the aim of subsequently preparing a report summarizing the investigation's findings and clarifying the events that occurred in Ceuta. The People's Party (PP) stated that the delegation intends to learn "the specific circumstances surrounding the invasion," as well as Morocco's role and the effectiveness of cooperation between Brussels and Rabat. It also seeks to determine what alerts and reports Spanish authorities received before and during the mass entry of people into the autonomous city. For its part, the Spanish delegation from Vox asserted that it will request the mission hold meetings with representatives of JUPOL, neighborhood associations, and Ceuta residents, as well as with women victims of sexual violence who wish to testify, guaranteeing their privacy at all times. Vox will also "demand" that the investigation determine "what happened, how the authorities acted, and what responsibilities the Sánchez government must assume for the lack of protection in Ceuta."
