The Spanish government on Tuesday strongly condemned the indiscriminate attacks by the Houthi Shiite militias against troops of the internationally recognized government of Yemen, as well as against various civilian infrastructure sites in different locations throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured in these attacks and its solidarity with their governments, and expressed its deep concern about the spread of regional instability caused by the Houthis, which threatens both Saudi sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.
“Given the escalating violence in Yemen, the Government of Spain expresses its deep concern and its support for the Presidential Leadership Council, the internationally recognized government, in its efforts to ensure the country’s stability against attempts to interfere in its internal affairs, in violation of Security Council resolution 2216,” the statement continues.
“Spain urges the Houthis to cease their attacks and violations of international law, and to end the escalating violence that threatens stability and security in the Middle East, calling for a return to the negotiating table to move towards a lasting and sustainable solution,” it concludes.
