Spain has nearly 2,200 aid workers worldwide, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America

The Diplomat Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares highlighted on Monday the work of the nearly 2,200 Spanish cooperation professionals working around the world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, and assured that the Ministry is working “every day to help Ceuta return to normal.” Albares made these remarks during the commemoration of International Cooperation Workers' Day, held at the headquarters of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) under the theme “Strategic Alliances for a World with Zero Hunger.” “On this day, we pay tribute to an essential and indispensable aspect of our foreign policy: a particularly difficult task in the current international climate and a task more necessary than ever,” declared the minister, who thanked the 2,192 Spanish cooperation professionals currently working in various countries and international organizations. “At the Ministry, we work every day to help Ceuta return to normal,” Albares affirmed in her address. “That’s why this weekend we sent equipment from the AECID’s START team, which has the capacity to house more than 600 people,” he added. Following the opening of the event commemorating International Development Cooperation Day, celebrated every September 8, speeches were given by the Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Eva Granados, and the Director of AECID, Victoria Tur. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spanish aid workers carry out their activities in all regions where Spanish cooperation is present. Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number, with 1,018 people, followed by Central America, with 355, and South America, with 352. Aid workers are also stationed in Europe, Asia, the Maghreb, and the Middle East. The aid worker community comprises 1,166 women and 1,026 men. Of the aid workers, 409 are under 35 years old, while 1,776 are over that age. Among the Spanish aid workers, 651 are linked to non-governmental development organizations (NGOs), 535 work for international organizations, 587 belong to religious organizations, and 201 are professionals with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), in addition to others who work in various fields. This year's International Day of Aid Workers was dedicated to food security and the fight against hunger, with the theme "Strategic Alliances for a World with Zero Hunger." AECID brought together aid workers representing different areas of cooperation at its headquarters to share experiences and reflect on the role of alliances in guaranteeing the right to food. The event also provided an opportunity to share progress in developing the new Spanish Cooperation Strategy for Food Security and the Fight Against Hunger.
