The Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree on Tuesday appointing María de las Heras as Spain’s representative to the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation (Eurojust), based in The Hague.
To assume this position, De las Heras will have to leave her post as Spain’s liaison magistrate to the United States authorities, with accreditation extended to the competent authorities of Canada since 2021. María de las Heras was appointed to this position in March 2020 and renewed in April 2025.
María de las Heras joined the Public Prosecutor’s Office in 1999. Since then, she has worked in the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Girona (1999-2008), the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid (2008-2012), and at the Center for Legal Studies, where she has held the positions of advisor (2011-2012) and director (2018-2020).
Internationally, she has served as Resident Advisor for European Union Twinning projects in Poland (2002-2003), Croatia (2005-2006), and Albania (2008-2010). She has also worked as an advisor and director for European Union-funded projects in the Balkans and the Horn of Africa, and as an expert on activities for the World Bank, the United Nations, and the Organization of American States. She was an evaluator for the Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) (2006) and served as a prosecutor attached to the Office of the Prosecutor for International Cooperation (2012-2018).
Furthermore, she has been a member of the Network of Prosecutors for International Cooperation, a contact point for the European Judicial Network (both criminal and civil), and a contact point for the Ibero-American Network for International Legal Cooperation.
