French Ambassador explores Balearic Islands innovation ecosystem

The Diplomat The French Ambassador to Spain, Kareen Rispal, paid an official visit to ParcBit in Palma to learn about the Balearic Islands' innovation ecosystem and the strategy implemented by the Balearic Government to consolidate the archipelago as a hub for attracting investments related to technology, research, and the knowledge economy. The diplomat was accompanied by the French Consul General in Barcelona, Azar Agah-Ducrocq, whose consular district includes Aragon, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands; the Honorary Consul of France in Palma, Michel Magnier; and the Deputy Cultural Attaché of the Cultural and Cooperation Service of the French Embassy in Spain, Laurent Bertat. The French delegation was received by Bárbara Barceló, Director General of Strategic Projects, European Funds, and Administrative Simplification for the Balearic Government; Sebastián González, Director General of Innovation and Digital Transformation and Vice President of the Bit Foundation; and Paz de Vílchez, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the University of the Balearic Islands. During the meeting, the Balearic Government presented the French delegation with the main lines of its strategy to promote a more diversified and competitive economic model, based on innovation, digitalization, and the development of knowledge-intensive activities. The meeting also served as an opportunity to exchange views on potential areas of collaboration between French and Balearic institutions, companies, and research centers, in a context where technological cooperation and attracting foreign investment are playing an increasingly important role on the European economic agenda. One of the key aspects of the visit was learning about ParcBit, considered the leading innovation ecosystem in the Balearic Islands. The science and technology park brings together companies, startups, research centers, and public entities specializing in fields such as artificial intelligence, information and communication technologies, cybersecurity, aerospace technologies, and digital solutions applied to tourism—sectors in which the archipelago seeks to strengthen its international competitiveness. The French delegation also visited the facilities of OmniAccess, a Mallorcan company with an international reputation specializing in maritime connectivity, satellite communications, and cybersecurity, whose activity reflects the growing technological specialization developed in the Balearic Islands in recent years. Economic Cooperation between France and the Balearic Islands The ambassador's visit is part of the close relationship between France and the Balearic Islands. France is one of Spain's main economic partners, and the French market maintains a strong presence in the archipelago through both tourism and business activity, facilitated by the numerous air and sea connections between the two territories. Beyond the traditional tourism ties, economic relations between France and the Balearic Islands have expanded into higher value-added sectors such as innovation, the digital economy, research, renewable energy, and sustainable mobility. In this context, the Balearic Government is working to strengthen the islands' international profile and attract business projects that will contribute to diversifying an economy historically linked to the tourism sector. Collaboration between French and Balearic institutions also finds expression in higher education, research, and participation in European innovation programs, fostering partnerships between universities, technology centers, and companies in both countries. Economic Diplomacy at the Service of Innovation Kareen Rispal's visit also reflects the growing importance of economic diplomacy in bilateral relations between France and Spain. Beyond political and cultural cooperation, both administrations are promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening European competitiveness through innovation, digital transformation, and knowledge exchange between regions. In this context, the Balearic Islands aspire to consolidate their position as a Mediterranean leader in technological innovation and the digital economy, an objective for which cooperation with European partners such as France is strategic, both because of the strength of existing economic relations and the opportunities for collaboration offered by European Union funding programs. With this visit, the French Embassy and the Government of the Balearic Islands reaffirm their commitment to further strengthening institutional ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation in areas considered priorities for the economic development of both territories.
