Next Monday, June 22, Casa de América and the Embassy of Paraguay in Spain will present the lecture “Asunción, Paraguay: From Bastion to City,” given by Herib Caballero, PhD in History, as part of the series “History and Heritage Cities of Ibero-America.” The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Simón Bolívar Room at Casa de América (Plaza de la Cibeles, s/n, Madrid). Admission is free until capacity is reached.
This lecture will address the historical process of the formation of the city of Asunción, Paraguay, founded in 1537 as a fortified settlement and later transformed into a city, playing a fundamental role in Spanish expansion on the northern edge of the Río de la Plata.
Through multiple approaches, this presentation aims to analyze in detail the history and development of this Ibero-American city, particularly by reviewing the information gathered in the residencia trials, which offer insight into the experiences, aspirations, and frustrations of those who shaped Asunción, Paraguay.
Herib Caballero Campos holds a Bachelor’s and a Doctorate in History from the National University of Asunción and a Master’s degree in the History of the Hispanic World from the CSIC (Spanish National Research Council). He is also a university professor and a former Carolina Foundation fellow. He currently serves as president of the Scientific Society of Paraguay.
