Changes in the global landscape—the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Brexit, the rise of China, conflicts in the Middle East, and the new US national security strategy—present a new and highly complex context for the European Union’s actions.
It is time for Europe to confront this new situation and protect our interests and values, reconsider European security and defense, and examine possible policies and initiatives that will allow its adaptation to the emerging scenario.
At this critical moment, the Alternatives Foundation invites you to the presentation and discussion of the working paper by Carlos Martí Sempere: “The Path to a More Autonomous and Sovereign Europe: Proposals to Reduce its Military and Technological Dependence.” The paper aims to review the current European security architecture and its capacity to achieve a strategically more autonomous and sovereign Europe, particularly in relation to the US and China.
This report provides an integrated analysis of the factors that influence this autonomy: political, institutional, operational, economic, technological, and industrial, highlighting weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and needs, as well as the reasons or obstacles that may hinder its improvement. With this, Alternativas aims to contribute to the advancement of defense policies towards greater strategic autonomy, both for Spain and for the European Union as a whole.
The debate will take place on Tuesday, June 30th at 11:00 AM at the Ceseden headquarters (Castellana 61, Madrid). Access is available by registration or via Zoom.
