The mayor of St. Augustine (Florida, USA), Nancy Sikes-Kline, will deliver the lecture ‘Beyond Heritage: St. Augustine, Spain, and the Future of a Shared Legacy’ this Tuesday, June 16, as part of the series ‘History and Heritage Cities of Ibero-America’. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Simón Bolívar Room of the Casa de América in Madrid (Plaza de la Cibeles, s/n). Admission is free until capacity is reached. The presentation will be given in English with Spanish translation.
Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline’s visit to Madrid coincides with the awarding of the 11th Bernardo de Gálvez Prize to the city of St. Augustine, Florida. This talk aims to foster an open and engaging dialogue on shared memory, citizenship, and cultural diplomacy between Spain and the United States.
The dialogue will propose a reflection on what it means today to preserve and project a living historical legacy and how lasting bonds are built between communities on both sides of the Atlantic. It will also address issues such as the contemporary role of historic cities, the preservation of identity and shared memory, pride and civic participation, the leadership of women in cities with significant heritage, as well as the value of cultural cooperation and sustainable and responsible cultural tourism. All of this will take place in the context of the awarding of the 11th Bernardo de Gálvez Prize to the city of St. Augustine and the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States.
