Spain and Uzbekistan sign agreement for bilateral political consultations

The Diplomat Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares received his Uzbek counterpart, Bakhtiyor Saidov, in Madrid on Tuesday, where they signed several agreements on cooperation between the diplomatic academies of both countries, holding political consultations, and visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic passports. During the meeting, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release, Albares recalled the establishment of a Spanish diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan in 2022 and stated that strengthening Spain's institutional presence in the country has helped create the necessary conditions to increase trade and investment in both directions, as well as to deepen collaboration in connectivity, energy, sustainable agriculture, and culture—areas in which Spain "wants to position itself as a partner of Uzbekistan." Furthermore, according to the Ministry, the meeting took place during the launch of Spain's Asia-Pacific Strategy 2026-2029, which "gives a prominent role to strengthening relations with Uzbekistan and the rest of Central Asia." During the meeting, which took place at the Viana Palace, the ministers signed a reciprocal visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, a cooperation program between foreign ministries, including the development of political consultations, and a memorandum of understanding between the Diplomatic Schools of both countries.
