The Government of Peru dismisses its ambassador in Spain, who will continue in office until the end of July

Eduardo González The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed the current ambassador of Peru in Spain, Luis Iberico, who will remain in office until the end of July. In a press release, the Ministry announced this Tuesday, June 2, the "term of office" of Peru's ambassadors in Costa Rica, France, India, the United States and Spain (all of them by political appointment), who "must cease without fail at the end of the government period that appointed them." Specifically, the statement refers to the changeover that will occur in the country due to the second presidential round, which will be held this coming Sunday, June 7, and which will pit the right-wing Keiko Fujimori Higuchi, Fuerza Popular (FP), against the left-wing Roberto Sánchez Palomino, from Together for Peru (JP), after the first round on April 12. The current transitional government, chaired by José María Balcázar, will conclude its mandate on July 28. Therefore, as the Foreign Ministry recalls, the completion of the ambassadors' functions "will culminate during the month of July 2026." Meanwhile, the current Executive will not appoint political ambassadors in the aforementioned diplomatic missions and the decision to appoint new heads of mission will fall “entirely” to the next Government. According to the chancellor, Carlos Pareja, this measure is part of the regular transition process prior to the change of Government. In statements to the Peruvian newspaper 'Diario Correo', the ambassador to Spain, Luis Iberico, specified that he will remain in his position until the ministerial resolution is issued that establishes the exact date of his return to the country. “In my case it would be until the end of July,” he indicated. Luis Iberico Núñez (born in Buenos Aires in January 1959) worked as a journalist and was a member of his country's Congress for several terms (with the Alliance for Progress, APP party), serving as Speaker of the House twice. He has been Peru's ambassador to Spain and to the World Tourism Organization since July 4, 2024, appointed by then-President Dina Boluarte (2022-2025). Previously, he served as ambassador to Italy and to the multilateral organizations FAO, WFP, and IFAD between 2016 and 2018.
