Albares asks that “no credence” be given to the “terrorist group” that has spread the photo of Sánchez on an Iranian missile

Eduardo González Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated on Monday that he knows “nothing” about the alleged appearance of a photograph of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on an Iranian missile, but warned against giving “any credence” to images disseminated by a “terrorist group” like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. On March 22, several channels aligned with the Iranian regime published a video showing a sticker with Pedro Sánchez's face that had supposedly been placed on the surface of a missile just before a new wave of attacks against US and Israeli targets. Accompanying the image was a phrase in Persian that read, “The Spanish Prime Minister says this war is illegal, and we say so too.” There was also another phrase in English and Persian, with the text “Of course this war is not only illegal, but also inhumane. Thank you Prime Minister.” For its part, the state news agency Tasnim, linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, also published a photo of Sánchez’s poster with a message announcing that these missiles would be launched “soon toward the occupied territories.” The Spanish government has not publicly reacted to these images to date, although they were mentioned (and presented as fact) on March 25 in Congress by the president of the People’s Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, and the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, during the plenary session dedicated to the war in the Middle East. “I certainly have no knowledge that this video is real” or that it is “a fake,” Albares declared this Monday on the program ‘El món’ on RAC1. “I know nothing about it. These are just some images I’ve seen; I have no idea who took them or what their motivation is, and I don’t pay much attention to them,” he insisted. “I don’t give credence to terrorist groups,” Albares asserted, referring to the Revolutionary Guard, “which I, as Foreign Minister, voted for in the Foreign Affairs Council to be declared a terrorist group.” “What I can tell you is that the whole world is very clear on Spain’s position, both on this war and on the Iranian regime,” he affirmed. “We have condemned all the human rights violations of the Iranian regime. Last week, we issued an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemning the latest executions of opposition members, demanding that Iran cease them immediately. We have voted for all the sanctions against the regime, and we voted in favor of including the Revolutionary Guard on the European Union’s list of terrorist groups,” he recalled. “Therefore, there is no ambiguity, and I wouldn’t waste a single second, in the face of this terrible war before us, speculating about those images about which I have no knowledge,” he insisted.
