The Government appoints Cristina Díaz Fernández-Gil as Ambassador on Special Mission for Development Financing

Eduardo González The Council of Ministers this past Tuesday appointed Cristina Díaz Fernández-Gil to the position of Ambassador on Special Mission for Development Financing. Born in Madrid in 1962, she graduated in Political Science and English Philology from the Complutense University of Madrid and joined the Diplomatic Service in 1991. In November of that same year, she was appointed Head of the Middle East Service, which allowed her to begin a relationship with Africa and Asia that would become a constant in her career. In 1993, she joined the Diplomatic Information Office as a Technical Advisor, a position she held until becoming Deputy Head of the Spanish Embassy in Pakistan in August 1994. In 1996, she moved to Kenya, where she took over as Deputy Head of the Spanish Embassy. In 1999, she took office as a counselor at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the UN and international organizations in Geneva, where she remained until 2003, when she was assigned to the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) as a Technical Advisor for Cooperation in the Subdirectorate General for Cooperation with Countries of the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. Shortly after, in May 2004, also at AECID, she held the position of Deputy Director General for Cooperation with Countries of Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, until her appointment as Spanish Ambassador to the Ivory Coast, with accreditation to Liberia and Burkina Faso, in 2007. At the Cooperation Agency, she also served as Technical Advisor for the Balkans and Director of Cooperation with Africa and Asia. In 2011, she was appointed Spanish Ambassador to Senegal and, four years later, as an advisory member in the Directorate General for the Maghreb, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Near East. From 2021 until this year, she was ambassador to Kenya, where she also served as permanent representative to the UN Office in Nairobi.
