The Spanish government has welcomed the release of American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, kidnapped by Hamas since October 7, 2023, and demanded the “immediate and unconditional” release of all hostages.

“Spain welcomes the release of Edan Alexander, held captive by Hamas since October 7, 2023,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. “Spain demands, once again, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and calls for an immediate return to the ceasefire agreement and the resumption of humanitarian aid,” it concluded.

Edan Alexander is a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier who had volunteered to remain at a border military base located in southern Israel on the same day as the Hamas attacks, which left around 1,200 dead.

Alexander has finally been released after 584 days in captivity, according to the Spanish Foreign Ministry. Hamas confirmed this Monday in a statement. Hamas described this act as “a gesture” toward the United States for its role as mediator in the conflict and called on President Donald Trump to “continue his efforts to end this brutal war waged by war criminal (Benjamin) Netanyahu against children, women, and defenseless civilians in the Gaza Strip.” It also stated that it is ready to “immediately begin negotiations to reach a comprehensive agreement for a sustainable ceasefire.”
