The Government approves 34.7 million euros in voluntary contributions, 7.5 million for UNHCR

Eduardo González The Council of Ministers authorized this Tuesday a total of eighty-three voluntary contributions from Spain to international organizations, programs and funds and other entities of an international nature for a total amount of more than 34.7 million euros. According to diplomatic sources who spoke to The Diplomat, these voluntary contributions include 7.5 million euros for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and three million for projects of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lebanon. In addition, Spain will contribute 1.6 million euros to the Grain from Ukraine initiative, launched by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to supply grain to the poorest countries in Africa and alleviate the consequences of the Russian invasion against one of the main grain suppliers of the World Food Programme (WFP) and the fourth largest grain exporter in the world. The list of voluntary contributions includes one million euros for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 500,000 euros for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), 500,000 euros for the World Food Programme (WFP) or 200,000 euros for the International Commission against the Death Penalty. In accordance with its political priorities, according to the aforementioned sources, “Spain has been regularly making voluntary contributions to various international organizations, programs and funds and other international entities dedicated to the defense and promotion of human rights, the strengthening of international peace and security and the fight against international terrorism and crime.” The motivation for these contributions, they continued, is to be “a convenient and timely instrument in the current context to support the activity of international organisations and other entities of an international nature that are of interest to Spain.” “They are also a powerful tool with which to promote foreign policy priorities and Spain's position in these institutions,” they added.
