CC demands information from the Government on Moroccan manoeuvres off Canary Islands

The Diplomat The spokesperson for the Canary Islands Coalition in the Congress of Deputies, Cristina Valido, has requested information from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, on the military manoeuvres that Morocco will carry out from 1st September in waters situated some 140 kilometres from Fuerteventura. In a statement, the nationalist pointed out that these military exercises, which the North African country has described as ordinary military manoeuvres, will be active until the end of the year. Therefore, the deputy demands information from the Government of Spain on the characteristics of the Moroccan manoeuvres and warns of their impact on a fragile natural environment off the Canary Islands, reports Europa Press. "We need to know what information the Spanish Government, and specifically the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has on these military manoeuvres that Morocco has already announced, that is, that in two weeks they will be taking place very close to the islands," she said. She also requested all available information on the shooting exercises that, according to the Rabat Government, will take place in a maritime space in the waters of Western Sahara, located some 140 kilometres from the coast of the island of Fuerteventura. "What information does the Spanish Government have about manoeuvres so close to the archipelago?" Valido asked the minister, who also asked him about the information that his department has shared with the Canary Islands Government on the characteristics of these new Moroccan military manoeuvres in waters close to the Canary Islands. In this scenario, CC also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the possible harmful consequences of the Moroccan shooting exercises in the natural environment of the Atlantic maritime spaces where the military manoeuvres announced by Rabat are planned to take place. "These maritime spaces are valued as one of the richest ocean corridors in biodiversity on the planet and the Government of Spain must be aware of the serious environmental damage that military exercises could cause," she concludes.
