Cypriot ambassador celebrates Orthodox New Year with traditional Vasilopita

Helena Mina, Ambassador of Cyprus, brought together friends and colleagues (including Her Royal Highness Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark and the Ambassadors of Greece and Poland) at her residence to celebrate the cutting of the Vasilopita and to share this traditional Cypriot holiday with them.

 

After dedicating a few words in her own language to the compatriots present at the event, the ambassador pointed out that “this is our cake, the Cyprus cake, and one of the most inspiring traditions of our culture and our Church, and it is something very simple, which is eaten on the first of January, the day of St. Basil, in family and with this act we bless the house and wish luck for the new year”.

 

Helena mina stressed that “there is a hidden coin inside the vasilopita and the person who finds it will be a very lucky person during the new year”.

 

Her Royal Highness Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark attended the words of the Cypriot Ambassador, together with the other guests.
