Algeria has consolidated its position as the main supplier of natural gas to Spain so far in 2023, having once again been the leading supplier in July, with a total of 9,106 gigawatt hours (GWh), covering 28.7% of monthly demand, according to data from the latest Enagás bulletin.

Thus, in the first seven months of the year, the African country, historically the main Spanish supplier of natural gas although last year it was overtaken by the United States, has supplied more than 59,100 GWh to the country, covering 25% of total demand up to July. Europa Press reports.

Algeria is thus ahead of Russia, which with 49,909 GWh has supplied 21.1% of Spain’s demand for natural gas in 2023, having also been the second main source of gas arriving in the country in July, with 8,764 GWh, 27.6% of the total.

In third place, in July and in the first seven months of 2023, was the United States, with 19.1% of total demand this year, ahead of Nigeria, with 13.9%.

As far as underground storage facilities are concerned, they are practically at their maximum level of fullness, reaching 99% at the end of July. In the same month last year, they were at 78%.
Domestic demand for natural gas in July fell by 15.9% compared to the same period last year, with 26,199 GWh. In contrast, conventional demand grew by 13%, while that of the electricity sector fell by 39.4%.

In the first seven months of the year, natural gas consumption accumulated a decline of 14% compared to the same period in 2022, with 192,517 GWh.
