The head of Barcelona’s Court of Instruction number 5 has decided to open a criminal case against the former mayor, Ada Colau, and the then director of Global Justice and International Cooperation of the City Council, David Llistar, for breaking relations with Israel and the twinning of the city with Tel-Aviv, according to a resolution advanced by ‘eldiario.es’ and ‘Nació Digital’.
The magistrate has admitted a complaint filed by the lawyer Francesc Jufresa on the grounds that her decision constitutes a crime of prevarication and a complaint filed by the Association and Communication on the Middle East, reports Europa Press.
The plaintiff lawyers claim that Colau intended to “break relations with the State of Israel”, despite lacking the power to do so, although she was unable to submit this initiative to the plenary session due to a lack of sufficient votes. The lawyers initially presented their complaint to the Audiencia Nacional but the court dismissed it for lack of competence.
BComú councillor Marc Serra told reporters that “it is an identical complaint to the one that had already been presented to the National Court and was shelved”, and he was confident that this new complaint would be shelved.
“It is yet another legal action designed to make noise in the media, to make political opposition to the policies that BComú has promoted in the City Council in recent years,” he criticised.
He also insisted that the mayor’s office has the power to suspend or modify the friendship agreement signed by former socialist mayor Joan Clos.
