Tragicomedy ‘¡Ay, Carmela!’ premieres at Teatro Bellas Artes

Until 11 June, the well-known actors Pepón Nieto and María Adánez star in Ay, Carmela! at the Teatro Bellas Artes in Madrid (Calle del Marqués de Casa Riera, 2), one of the most acclaimed texts of contemporary national theatre, under the direction of José Carlos Plaza.

After the premiere of the show last November in Toledo, Pepón Nieto and José Sanchis Sinisterra have been nominated for the awards given by the Teatro Municipal de Rojas in the categories of Best Male Performance and Best Spanish Playwriting, respectively.

The play was brought to the big screen in 1990 by director Carlos Saura and starred Carmen Maura and Andrés Pajares. A production that received numerous Goya Awards in its 5th edition, including: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Leading Actor, among many others, being the big winner of that edition.

This new and fresh proposal of ¡Ay, Carmela! leaves the viewer with a heavy heart. Because no matter how much time passes, in this text we find a story of overcoming that never goes out of fashion. A story of struggle. A story in which the two protagonists come face to face with a harsh and complex reality, which they try to understand in order to confront. A social, funny and exciting play.
