The Embassy of the Dominican Republic closed last Friday 31 March the exhibition of oil portraits Dominican Women Patriots, created by Aronis Ramos, a Dominican artist living in Madrid.

These works show the courage and patriotism of Dominican women in their struggle for independence and the liberties of the people. Rosa Duarte, María Trinidad Sánchez, Socorro Sánchez, Concepción Bona, Juana Saltitopa, Salomé Ureña de Henríquez, Ercilia Pepín and the Mirabal Sisters, represent the courage and dedication of those who fought for freedom as an ideal.

In this exhibition, the artist captured on canvas his great power of expression, capturing with mastery and conviction the essential traits of each of these women, their character and their history, executing them with great capacity for synthesis. Firm, simple, clean strokes, on unelaborated backgrounds, by a use of colour and light that radiates clarity and awakens in the viewer the curiosity to inquire about the lives of these emblematic Dominican women.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 7 March at the Centro Socio Cultural José de Espronceda in the Tetuán neighbourhood, in commemoration of International Women’s Day. Among the public in attendance were active members of the Dominican community living in Spain.
