Today sees the Spanish premiere of the film To Leslie, directed by Michael Morris and starring Andrea Riseborough, who has earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role and has already received a nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards in the same category.
Riseborough’s performance had gone largely unnoticed this awards season, but the support of dozens of A-list actors has propelled the British actress to the nomination. Stars including Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Sarah Paulson and Edward Norton hosted screenings of the film, joined by enthusiasm from the likes of Courteney Cox and Gwenyth Paltrow, who called the film “a masterpiece” and said the title star should win “every award there is and every award that hasn’t been invented yet”.
Other actors and actresses who have expressed their support for the actress on social media include Susan Sarandon, who called the film a “beautiful, little gem”; and Helen Hunt, who said: “If you’re voting for performances, don’t do it until you see Andrea Riseborough.
Based on true events, the film tells the story of Leslie, a single mother from West Texas, who six years ago won the lottery but quickly squandered the prize, spending it all on parties and alcohol. Gutted, she turns to her son in an attempt to get her life back on track.
