The Second Vice-President of the Government, Yolanda Díaz, will form part of the Spanish delegation, headed by His Majesty the King, to attend the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as President of Brazil on 1 January.

Yolanda Díaz confirmed on Friday that she will be present at the ceremony, after meeting her Uruguayan counterpart, Pablo Mieres, in Montevideo.

Together with the monarch and the Second Vice-President, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will also be present at the inauguration.

Members of Unidas Podemos in the government have in the past attended the inaugurations of Latin American presidents who move in the orbit of the left. Díaz herself was present at the inauguration of Gabriel Boric as head of state of Chile last March.

The second vice-president had already celebrated Lula da Silva’s victory on the same day that the results of the second round of the elections were announced in Brazil. “The #BrasilDaEsperança has won! Brazilian citizens have chosen to look to the future. They have chosen Lula to take care of democracy. Now, we will work together for a Latin America and Europe of social and climate justice,” he said on social networks.

So far, in addition to the King, 12 other heads of state have announced their presence at the ceremony in which Lula will once again assume the Presidency of the country.
