The Ibero-American Secretary General, Andrés Allamand, yesterday began his first official tour of Latin America since taking office on 8 February to prepare for the 28th Ibero-American Summit to be held in November this year in the Dominican Republic.

According to a note from the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib), which has its headquarters in Madrid, Allamand’s tour will last until 9 May, and his aim is also to strengthen ties with each of the countries he will visit and to learn about the priorities of each of them before the Summit, which will bring together the Ibero-American heads of state and government under the slogan. “A fairer and more sustainable Ibero-America”.

During his trip, which began yesterday in Panama, Allamand will be received by the presidents and foreign ministers of the countries included in the tour, with whom he will analyse how to boost cooperation and the promotion of projects and programmes in the field of Ibero-American cooperation. To this end, he will also meet with various authorities and representatives of the business and academic world.

After his stay in Panama, Andrés Allamand will travel,  on 27 and 28, to the Dominican Republic, the country organising the Summit, where he will take part in the Assembly of the Ibero-American Sports Council and the 11th Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Agriculture.

The next stops on his trip will be Argentina, on 2 and 3 May; Uruguay, on 4 May; and Colombia, on 5 and 6 May.

The Ibero-American Secretary General will conclude his tour with a visit to Costa Rica on 7, 8 and 9 May, where he plans to attend the inauguration of the country’s new president, Rodrigo Chaves.
