On Monday 30 October, from 12.30 to 14.00, the European Council on Foreign Relations is organising a public debate at Casa América entitled The EU and Latin America and the Caribbean: A strategic autonomy beneficial for both regions.
The aim of this event is to discuss the agenda and strategies that will articulate this cooperation in a European key from different sectors: both in energy and technology and in food and health, the four pillars on which the programme of the Spanish Presidency is based. Representatives from the governments of Spain and Latin America and the Caribbean, the private sector and the world of thought will be involved.
As was made clear in the reflection document “Resilient EU 2030” presented to the informal European Council held in Granada on 6 October, the Spanish Presidency of the European Union is committed to an open strategic autonomy, which promotes links with other regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, framing them in a mutually beneficial relationship through economic, trade and public-private investment agreements on the basis of shared democratic and humanistic values.
In areas where the EU has critical dependencies, deepening strategic cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean can generate complementarities for sustainable, inclusive and fair development on both sides of the Atlantic.
After opening remarks by Pascual Ignacio Navarro Ríos, Secretary of State for the European Union, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, a panel discussion will be opened with the participation of Marta Blanco, President, CEOE International; Diego Rubio, Director of the National Office of Foresight and Strategy, Presidency of the Government of Spain, and Javier Velasco, Ambassador of Chile in Spain. This will be followed by an open debate moderated by José Ignacio Torreblanca, Director of the Madrid Office and Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations.
The meeting will be held in Spanish without simultaneous translation. The event is free to attend, subject to prior registration through this form, until full capacity is reached.
