The Spanish government yesterday condemned the destruction of the dam at the Nova Kajovka hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region of Ukraine.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it described what had happened as a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law”, adding that it “affects the lives and safety of thousands of people in the region, and represents great environmental damage”.
“Spain reiterates its commitment to the sovereignty and freedom of Ukraine and to peace with full respect for the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
In similar terms, the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, expressed his solidarity with the Ukrainian people on his Twitter account. “We condemn the destruction of civilian infrastructure, contrary to international humanitarian law,” he wrote, in a message in which he assured that Spain “will always be with Ukraine in the face of brutal Russian aggression”.
