This afternoon at 6.30 pm, Casa América presents the conference The artistic legacy of Josefina Plá: The Julián de la Herrería Museum, by María Blanco Conde, curator of exhibitions. Free admission until full capacity is reached.
Josefina Plá (Isla de Lobos, Fuerteventura, 1903-Asunción, Paraguay, 1999). She was a renowned writer, poet, art critic, historian, essayist and artist, among other professions that she carried out throughout her long career. From 1927 to 1980 she dedicated herself to the production of ceramic pieces and engravings.
Josefina Plá took up residence in Asunción after the death of her husband, the Paraguayan artist Andrés Campos Cervera (Asunción, 1888-Manises, 1937), a painter and ceramist until his death in the midst of the Spanish Civil War. Campos Cervera adopted the pseudonym Julián de la Herrería from August 1928 until his death. Throughout his life he collected works by the most prominent contemporary artists of Paraguay and, after his death, Josefina Plá created a museum with the collection formed by her husband, which brings together more than 400 works. In this way Josefina Plá, a Spanish transplant to Paraguay, performed a new and important service in favour of the culture of her new country.
At the event, Luis Prados Covarrubias, director of programming at Casa de América, will give a word of welcome and introduce the speaker, Ricardo Scavone Yegros, ambassador of the Republic of Paraguay.
María Blanco Conde is curator of the art collection of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). She is the author of the catalogue raisonné of Julián de la Herrería. At the end of September 2021 she carried out the current museographic project.
