The Spanish Ambassador to Honduras, Diego Nuño García, delivered last Friday to the Honduran authorities basic necessities -medical supplies, hygiene kits, shelter material, blankets and mosquito nets, among others- to meet humanitarian needs after the passage of Hurricane Julia.

The material also includes 1,100 roofing sheets, aseptic material, medical equipment and two boat motors to support the rescue efforts of the Honduran Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO). The aid will benefit some 1,200 families in nine municipalities in the Sula Valley, one of the most affected areas. Each family will receive a family hygiene kit, as well as basic grains, non-perishable food, a biosecurity kit, a mosquito net, and cleaning and disinfection products.

The value of the humanitarian material provided by Spain amounts to a total of 115,000 euros, 100,000 of which come from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) in Honduras and 15,000 euros from the CSAI Foundation of the Spanish Ministry of Health. All the material was delivered to the country’s Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO), the official body in charge of receiving and distributing aid at national and international level, for distribution to the people most affected by the floods.

Last September, floods and landslides caused by the rainy season in Honduras resulted in at least 16 deaths, more than 84,000 people affected and some 3,500 houses damaged or destroyed, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The situation has worsened with the passage of tropical storm Julia through the south of the country, which left at least 144,000 people affected and damage in 15 of the 18 departments of Honduras.
