The Diplomat
The INS Tarangini, the Indian Navy’s first sailing training ship, arrived in Gibraltar yesterday as part of the Lokayan 22, a voyage that will take her to 14 countries in seven months.
The Tarangini, whose name comes from the Hindi word “Tarang” meaning waves, is a three-masted steel sailing ship with a permanent crew of six officers and 30 sailors, plus 25 Indian cadets and two from the Britannia Royal Naval College.
Over the years, the ship has been deployed extensively for various missions and has successfully completed the Circumnavigation of the Globe (2003-04) and four Lokayan (‘Dialogue among the Peoples) expeditions in 2005, 2007, 2015 and 2018. The objective of these overseas deployments is to conduct training of sea cadets, strengthen bilateral ties and showcase the Indian Navy’s reach across the globe.
During its stay in Gibraltar, the ship will conduct joint training with the Royal Navy’s Gibraltar Squadron and the crew will lay a wreath at the Commonwealth War Memorial.
