The Embassy of the Dominican Republic will honour the memory of Lucrecia Pérez Matos in a significant event on Saturday 13 November at 11 am, in the auditorium of the Progreso y Cultura Foundation of the UGT, on the 29th anniversary of her murder in Madrid, at the hands of a civil guard, an event motivated by the discrimination that was taking place at the time.

The activity will include a panel discussion with Bernarda Jiménez, author of the book Lucrecia Pérez Matos: Una muerte anunciada y la primera inmigración laboral a España; Kenia Carvajal, daughter of Lucrecia; and Patrocinio de las Heras, former councillor of the District of Aravaca. The artistic participation will be in charge of the writer Marielys Duluc, the singer Claudia Sánchez Vizcaíno and the pianist Mtro. Daniel Oriza. After the event, a wreath will be laid at the monument of Lucrecia Pérez, located at Avenida de la Osa Mayor 2, Madrid. Lucrecia Pérez Matos was born on 15 December 1959 in Vicente Noble, Barahona, Dominican Republic. She emigrated to Spain in search of a better future and to be able to provide for her daughter whom she left behind in her native country. She was murdered in Madrid, a victim of racism and xenophobia, the first case recognised as such in Spain.
