The Philippines and Spain are strengthening cooperation on social security. As part of this effort, the Philippine Social Security System (SSS) office in Madrid will reopen on September 11 at the Philippine Embassy.

The reopening will strengthen access to social security services for Filipino citizens living in Spain. It also represents further progress in the implementation of the Social Security Agreement between the Philippines and Spain.

Philippines-Spain Social Security Agreement

Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe J. Lhuillier has met with representatives of the Philippine Social Security System to discuss the implementation of the bilateral Social Security Agreement.

The meeting focused on the mechanisms needed to facilitate access to social security benefits for Filipino citizens residing in Spain. It also addressed the practical arrangements required to provide assistance through the SSS office in Madrid.

Among the measures provided for under the agreement is the possibility of aggregating contribution periods completed in the Philippines and Spain. This mechanism can help eligible workers access certain social security benefits while avoiding situations involving duplicate contributions.

SSS office to support Filipino citizens in Spain

The reopening of the SSS office in Madrid will allow the Philippine Social Security System to provide more direct assistance to the Filipino community in Spain.

Filipino citizens will be able to receive guidance on matters relating to their social security rights and benefits without having to handle certain procedures directly with authorities in the Philippines.

The initiative is particularly relevant given the size and longstanding presence of the Filipino community in Spain. Strengthening access to social protection is therefore an important element of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Wider Philippines-Spain cooperation

The implementation of the Social Security Agreement forms part of a broader framework of cooperation between the Philippines and Spain. Bilateral relations also encompass trade, investment, mobility, education and cultural ties.

The Philippine Embassy in Madrid plans to accompany the reopening of the SSS office with a series of activities aimed at the Filipino community throughout September.

These initiatives will further strengthen the Embassy’s role in providing services and support to Filipino citizens residing in Spain.

The reopening of the Philippine Social Security System office in Madrid marks another step in the practical implementation of the Philippines-Spain Social Security Agreement. It also strengthens one of the bilateral mechanisms with the most direct impact on Filipino citizens living and working in Spain.
