Heiko Thoms leaves Ukraine to become Germany’s new ambassador to Spain

Eduardo González Diplomat Heiko Thoms will assume the post of German ambassador to Spain next August, after a year as his country's representative in Ukraine, according to German media reports. A diplomat for over 25 years, Thoms has worked primarily on security and defense issues. In the summer of 2025, he was appointed ambassador to Ukraine at the request of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, to replace Martin Jäger, the new director of the Federal Intelligence Service. Before being posted to Ukraine, from April 2023 to May 2025, he served as State Secretary for European Policy and International Financial Policy at the Federal Ministry of Finance. In that role, he coordinated, among other things, Germany's financial assistance to Ukraine and made a significant contribution to coordinating support for Ukraine within the EU and the G7. Previously, he served as German ambassador to Brazil (2020–2023), envoy to NATO (2017–2020), and ambassador to the United Nations in New York (2013–2017). From 2011 to 2013, he was head of the senior staff at the Federal Foreign Office. Heiko Thoms studied law and Islamic studies. He will succeed Maria Margarete Gosse, Germany's first female ambassador to Spain, who arrived in Madrid in August 2022. Maria Gosse has a good understanding of Spain, as she is married to a Spaniard and served as deputy consul in Barcelona in the 1990s, early in her diplomatic career.
