Chinese Ambassador explores investment and industrial cooperation opportunities in Cantabria

Cristina Marcén The Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Spain, Yao Jing, paid an official visit to Cantabria this Tuesday to strengthen economic relations and explore new opportunities for bilateral cooperation. His agenda included a meeting with the regional president, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, meetings with representatives of the business sector, and visits to the Port of Santander and the future logistics center in La Pasiega. During their meeting at the Cantabria Government headquarters, the president presented the Chinese diplomat with the main industrial, logistical, and technological strengths of the autonomous community, highlighting its potential to attract new investments, especially in the automotive, advanced industry, renewable energy, and logistics sectors. Buruaga conveyed to the ambassador Cantabria's desire to become "a strategic partner for Chinese companies seeking to establish themselves and grow in Europe," emphasizing that the regional government is committed to a "facilitating" administrative model, with measures aimed at boosting industrial activity through tax incentives, administrative simplification, the creation of industrial land, and investments in infrastructure and training. For his part, Yao Jing explained that the purpose of his trip to Santander was to maintain direct contact with institutions and the business community to identify new areas of collaboration. "That is the reason for my visit to Santander: to meet with business leaders and companies to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation and to solidify our intention to strengthen industrial and commercial ties," the ambassador stated. The head of the Chinese diplomatic mission highlighted the importance of Cantabria's industrial and port infrastructure for China's economic interests in Europe and affirmed that there are "concrete ideas for collaboration" in areas such as renewable energy, green industries, automotive, logistics, and manufacturing. The institutional meeting, which also included the Regional Minister for Industry, Employment, Innovation, and Trade, Eduardo Arasti, provided an opportunity to address various strategic projects and analyze potential avenues for increasing economic cooperation between the two parties. Direct contact with the business community The ambassador's agenda began with a working breakfast organized by SODERCAN, in collaboration with the GIRA Cluster, attended by representatives of industrial companies and various economic sectors in the region. During the meeting, the capabilities of the Cantabrian automotive sector were presented. This sector represents nearly 30% of the regional industrial GDP, generates approximately 7,000 direct jobs, and includes more than fifty companies integrated into the GIRA cluster, many of which have significant export activity and trade relations with China. Representatives of multinational companies operating in Cantabria, such as Seg Automotive, Nissan, Hitachi, Bridgestone, Edscha, and Maflow, also participated in the meeting, along with the president of the Port Authority of Santander, César Díaz, and the director of SICAN, Ezequiel San Emeterio. Port of Santander and La Pasiega The visit concluded with a tour of the Port of Santander, where the ambassador learned about the capabilities of an infrastructure specializing in international vehicle traffic and industrial logistics, as well as the expansion projects for its container terminal. Later, Yao Jing visited the future La Pasiega Logistics and Industrial Center, considered one of the Cantabrian Government's key strategic initiatives to strengthen the region's logistics competitiveness and attract new international investment. The Chinese ambassador's visit is part of the strategy to strengthen economic relations between China and Spain and reflects the growing interest in identifying new opportunities for industrial and commercial cooperation with Spain's autonomous communities.
