Next Thursday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m., CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) will bring together a group of experts to discuss the entry into force this week of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum. The event will take place at CIDOB headquarters (Elisabets, 12, 08001 Barcelona), the discussion will be conducted in Spanish, and it will be broadcast live on CIDOB’s YouTube channel.
With the European Pact on Migration and Asylum coming into force this week, CIDOB will address this topic in the new edition of its series “What’s Happening in the World?”, bringing together in a single debate Alberto Horst Neidhardt, head of the European Diversity and Migration Programme at the European Policy Centre; Gemma Pinyol-Jiménez, director of migration policies at Instrategies and associate researcher at GRITIM-UPF; and Francesco Pasetti, senior migration researcher at CIDOB.
This Friday, June 12, the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum (EPAM), approved in 2024 after a long and controversial negotiation, will enter into force. This new legislative package fundamentally reforms the European migration governance system, also opening the door to significant developments such as the establishment of return centers outside EU territory. Its implementation raises key questions: from its operational viability to its implications for relations with non-EU countries, internal cohesion among member states, and the protection of migrants; it also ultimately calls into question the role, credibility, and legitimacy of European institutions.
This new session of the lecture series “What’s Happening in the World?” will assess the state of implementation of the Pact, taking into account delays and the diversity of national responses. It will analyze what is working, what difficulties are emerging, and what alternatives can be considered. The event will feature Alberto Horst Neidhardt, senior analyst and head of the European Diversity and Migration Programme at the European Policy Centre, and Gemma Pinyol-Jiménez, director of migration policies at Instrategies and associate researcher at GRITIM-UPF. The session will be moderated by Francesco Pasetti, principal researcher in the Migration area at CIDOB.
