This Monday, June 8, Casa de América, in collaboration with the Sefarad-Israel Center, will screen the film “The Two Mariettes” in Madrid. The screening will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Sala Iberia at Casa de América (Plaza de Cibeles, s/n, Madrid). Admission is free until the 90-seat capacity is reached. Tickets will be distributed one hour before the screening at the Information Point box office.
Poli Martínez Kaplun’s first film, “Lea y Mira” (Read and Look), explored the flame of wisdom and the overcoming of pain by filming two women over 90 years old who had survived the Auschwitz extermination camp. According to the director, making “La Casa de Wannsee” (The House of Wannsee), her second film, “meant opening the curtain on my own life; what was blurred began to make sense.”
This is how he came across Mariette and became interested in her story. During one of the presentations of “The House of Wannsee,” someone told him: “You have to meet a woman who recently started talking about a hidden past.” Mariette Diamant is 90 years old, lives in Buenos Aires, and belongs to the second generation, like her mother. When he met her, Martínez Kaplun says that she told him in a very low voice “her story, finding all the euphemisms that avoided the words Holocaust, persecution, war, and Jews.”
The event will include welcoming remarks from the general director of the Sefarad-Israel Center, José Thovar. After the film screening, there will be a discussion with the director and screenwriter, Poli Martínez Kaplun, and Ana Pellicer, coordinator of Institutional Relations at the Sefarad-Israel Center.
