With the aim of promoting critical reflection on hate speech, the Sefarad-Israel Center has opened the exhibition “The Judeo-Masonic Conspiracy: The Construction of a Myth,” produced in collaboration with the State Secretariat for Democratic Memory. The exhibition is dedicated to unraveling the construction and spread of the Francoist myth of a Judeo-Masonic and communist conspiracy against Spain.
Curated by Leandro Álvarez Rey, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Seville, the exhibition traces the ideological and propaganda mechanisms that cemented this narrative, which was used as a tool for political legitimization and justification of repression during the dictatorship.
The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections that address historical antisemitism in Spain, the stigmatization of Freemasonry, the Francoist propaganda apparatus, and the activities of the Special Tribunal for the Repression of Freemasonry and Communism, which operated between 1940 and the mid-1960s.
To this end, a carefully curated selection of original materials—documents, publications, posters, books, objects, and audiovisual resources—has been assembled from the Documentary Center of Historical Memory (Salamanca) and various private collections. This documentation allows the public to gain a critical perspective on the institutional construction and exploitation of political and religious hatred in 20th-century Spain.
