Instituto Francés discusses the philosophy of consent, with Manon Garcia

As part of the Instituto Francés’s cycle of thought and ideas entitled Materia prima, this afternoon at 7 p.m., the book Conversation between the sexes will be presented. Philosophy of consent, by Manon Garcia. French and Spanish with simultaneous translation. Free event upon prior reservation at this link. The author will talk with Carolina Meloni -philosopher, anti-colonial and border feminist-, a professor of philosophy at the University of Alcalá (Madrid).

The author helps, with a sharp analysis, to understand the very current concepts that regulate not only the most intimate aspects of our lives but also our perception of human relationships.

Global feminism has brought the issue of sexual violence to the fore. Since then, “consent” refers to sexual and loving consent, which is considered the key to equality between women and men. However, this one is very difficult to define and raises three problems. The legal problem, well known to those who follow today, can be summed up as follows: what should be done to ensure that cases of rape, assault and sexual harassment are effectively punished? The second problem is moral: how to conceive romantic and sexual relationships that are not based on sexist and unequal social norms? Finally, the political problem: how to prevent gender injustices manifested in romantic and sexual relationships from recurring?

The masterful analysis of consent proposed by Manon Garcia revisits our philosophical legacy, diving into the heart of the liberal tradition and exposing its unthought and limitations. From John Locke to French and American feminist theorists, Michel Foucault to debates about BDSM practice, this innovative essay traces a new political mapping of your private lives.

At the end of this book, it will be about, in short, to take up Gloria Steinem’s formula, “eroticizing equality” instead of domination: in this sense, sexual consent, conceived as an erotic conversation, is undoubtedly the future of love and sex.

Materia Prima, the cycle of thought and ideas of the French Institute of Spain, aims to propose debates, presentations and talks around the most current issues of our society.
