Fundación Alternativas: ‘Africa in the face of the financing for development crisis’

The Fundación Alternativas invites next Tuesday, March 17 at 12 noon to discuss at Casa África around the Africa 2026 Report.

This edition focuses on the challenges and opportunities that a new model of development financing poses as a result of factors such as the withdrawal of the US from the aid system, with the dismantling of USAID and the United Nations agencies. China’s growing presence through its Belt and Road project or new priorities in Europe, such as increased defense spending.

The Foundation Report provides an in-depth study that reflects and develops proposals for a new model of sustainable development financing. We are at a critical moment where the EU and Spain should contribute to the articulation of a new model, more horizontal, participatory and effective. Issues such as the current state of debt and development in Africa will be addressed: the nexus between security and development; tensions between external agendas and African interests in the Sahel and West Africa; the new scenario for Spanish and European cooperation; the role of the private sector, or the prospects for African development after the 4th Financing Summit in Seville.

After a welcoming speech by José Segura, director of Casa África, and the inauguration by Vicente Palacio, director of Foreign Policy at Fundación Alternativas, they will present the Jaume Portell (telematics) report, journalist specializing in Economics and International Relations and collaborator with media such as Ara, France 24, Context, 5W Magazine, The Guardian, El Salto Diario or Panenka magazine; Olga Namasembe, PhD in Women’s Studies and African Business Entrepreneurship from the University of Granada. She has actively collaborated with the Women for Africa Foundation in designing and strengthening its programs, and Romeo Gbaguidi, president and research director of the LemAfriQ Think Tank (Laboratory of the Study of African Migrations). The event will be moderated by Andrea Chamorro, coordinator of the Africa Report of the Fundación Alternativas. To register for the debate you can use this link.
