Playwright Juan Mayorga presents ‘La gran cacería’ at the Teatro del Barrio

Next Monday, March 9th, at 7:30 p.m., Juan Mayorga, playwright and stage director, presents La gran cacería (The Great Hunt) at the Teatro del Barrio in Madrid (Zurita Street, 20).

One sleepless night, a traveler—whose words are embodied by the author himself—crosses the Mediterranean, the sea most rich in history and stories. He returns to the mainland from Sicily, and in this dark hour, as he sails the waters once called Mare Nostrum, his mind is repeatedly assailed by the images of La gran cacería, a Roman mosaic he discovered during his visit to the great island.

This performance is an exploration by Juan Mayorga, playwright, stage director, teacher, member of the Royal Spanish Academy, artistic director of the Teatro de La Abadía, winner of the National Theater Prize and the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, who defines himself as a learner. Mayorga is a storyteller and a lover of theater, whose possibilities he constantly explores through writing and directing. La gran cacería is an ongoing project, one in which Mayorga and Teatro del Barrio have collaborated from the very beginning.

It premiered as a Teatro del Barrio production in 2023 at the Madrid Community Autumn Festival, starring Will Keen, Ana Lichinsky, and Francisco Reyes. Later, Alberto San Juan took on the role of the insomniac protagonist. Both productions were directed by Mayorga himself, who now also takes the stage to speak.
