Tomorrow Thursday at 11 o’clock, the working document Middle East in Transformation Challenges for the EU and Spain, is presented at Casa Árabe, prepared by Fundación Alternativas, in an event attended by leading experts on the subject. Must register at this link. It is also possible to watch through YouTube. The event will be held in Spanish.
The new regional balance of power imposed by Israel following the Hamas terrorist attack on 7 October 2023 is leading to profound changes and a repositioning of neighbouring countries such as Egypt, Turkey, the Gulf powers, Iran, Lebanon or Syria. The Trump Plan could encourage the adoption of a truce that partially alleviates the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and stops the massacre of civilians. However, this does not guarantee an end to the Israeli military occupation, nor a political horizon based on a two-State solution, or a stable horizon of wider regional peace. There are many open questions that affect the region and the answer that other actors such as the European Union or Spain itself can give.
Miguel Moro Aguilar, general director of Casa Árabe, will say a few words of welcome, together with Vicente Palacio, director of Foreign Policy of the Fundación Alternativas. Then there will be a special speech by Josep Borrell Fontelles, former High Representative for the EU’s Foreign Policy and Security (via video).
At 11.25 hours will begin a colloquium between Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio, professor of Arab and Islamic Studies (UCM); Rosa Meneses, deputy director of the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, and Elena Valenciano, patron of the Fundación Alternativas. The event will be moderated by Ángeles Espinosa, journalist for El País specializing in the Middle East.
