The Government of Spain congratulated Thailand and Cambodia on Monday on the ceasefire declaration and recognized “the involvement of Malaysia, the United States, and ASEAN in this progress.”

“We congratulate Thailand and Cambodia on the joint declaration signed at the ASEAN Summit, which reflects the two parties’ commitment to a verifiable ceasefire, the restoration of mutual trust, and the peaceful resolution of disputes,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“Spain recognizes the involvement of Malaysia, the United States, and ASEAN in this progress, which represents a commitment to de-escalation, peace, and stability based on international law,” it added.

US President Donald Trump announced this Sunday that Thailand and Cambodia had signed a “historic peace agreement” during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur. This agreement will put an end to the border disputes between the two countries, which led to a five-day armed confrontation last July, resulting in the deaths of 50 people.

The agreement was signed by the Prime Ministers of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and Cambodia, Hun Manet, in the presence of the US president, who mediated the negotiations.
