The Romanian Embassy, together with the Instituto Rumano de Cultura of Madrid and the district of Chamberí, is organising a series of three meetings with contemporary Romanian cinema at the Centro Cinematográfico Galileo (calle Fernando el Católico, 35), one of the most vibrant and award-winning forms of European cinema.

The opening of the film festival will take place this afternoon, starting at 19:00, when guests will participate in a special evening dedicated to Romanian culture, which will combine cinematic art with culinary traditions, on the occasion of Romanian Food and Wine Day (celebrated on the first Sunday in October). By organising this event, the Romanian Embassy wants to promote both Romanian cinema and the culinary heritage that defines national identity.

The public present will have the opportunity to see the film El secreto de la isla Pin-Up (pictured), directed by Alecs Năstoiu, a cinematographic proposal of great visual and thematic originality, winner of the “Best Production Design” award (Best Production Design) at the 49th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival, USA.

The Secret of Pin-Up Island is a science fiction film about a girl locked in an abandoned factory from which she tries to escape by solving puzzles and riddles, but it’s also a film about mental health, about people suffering from anxiety and depression, possible solutions to overcome them.

The following two screenings will be held on the 17th and 24th and will include recent productions (in original version with Spanish subtitles) illustrating the diversity and quality of cinema currently being produced in Romania, as follows: On 17 October, The King’s War will be screened, a deeply moving and revealing documentary that takes up the decisive role of King Michael I of Romania at a crucial moment in World War II.

The good guys go to paradise, a radiant and melancholy romantic comedy written and directed by Radu Potcoavă, will be presented on 24 October. A story about undeclared love, second chances and the paradises that are built with memories. Free admission until capacity is full.
