Spain congratulates Nicușor Dan and celebrates the defeat of the far-right in Romania

Eduardo González The President of the Government Pedro Sánchez congratulated centrist and pro-European leader Nicușor Dan on Monday for his victory in the Romanian presidential elections and celebrated the defeat of the far-right led by George Simion. "Congratulations to Nicușor Dan for his electoral victory in the Romanian presidential elections," Sánchez wrote on social media. "Romania wins and the EU wins. The far-right loses," he continued. "Looking forward to starting to work together in the European Council," he added. For his part, the president of the People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, also congratulated Nicușor Dan. “The pro-European leadership continues to resonate across the continent,” he wrote on the social network X. Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan claimed a decisive victory this Sunday in the presidential election that will determine Romania's destiny for the coming years. Dan, a centrist and pro-European candidate, was vying for the leadership of the country with far-right candidate George Simion, who had garnered over 40% of the vote in the first round. Dan's victory may be directly related to the high turnout on election day, which this time was 64.7%, more than ten points higher than the first round, when Nicușor Dan garnered only 20.9% of the vote. Dan received a total of 5,140,343 votes, 111,876 of them abroad, and Simion received 4,373,057, 141,142 in the diaspora, according to results published by the Permanent Electoral Authority (PEA). In Spain, where more than 600,000 Romanians reside (one of the largest foreign communities in our country), George Simion won with almost 68 percent of the vote (for a total of 128,854), while the future president, Dan, only received 32.02 percent (60,698 votes), according to PEA data.
