As part of the collaboration between Casa Asia and the Teatro Real, in parallel with its 2024/25 programme and on the occasion of the premiere of María Stuarda, the following conference will be held next Thursday at 7 pm at the cultural centre (Calle Mayor, 69): The Mughal emperor and his historical epoch in India and Europe. Free activity upon registration at this link.
We rarely stop to think about what was happening in Asia while some of the most important events in our common history were taking place in Europe. Mary Stuart and Emperor Akbar were both born in 1542.
Years later, Mary I of Scotland died under the death sentence of her cousin at a time when Philip II of Spain and Elizabeth I of England were in absolute power in Europe, while in Asia Akbar, who means «the great one» in Arabic, ruled over immense territory. The strategic vision of Emperor Mughal, his religious tolerance and his ability to unify a vast territory laid the foundations for a multicultural and pluralistic society and made him one of the most prominent leaders in world history.
Carmen Bedoya, Casa Asia’s Programming Coordinator, will present the event, and Emilio de Miguel, director of the Centro Casa Asia-Madrid, and Rubén Campos, senior associate researcher at the Real Instituto Elcano, will participate; Programme coordinator at the Club de Madrid and lecturer in various postgraduate courses.
Rubén Campos is a specialist in international relations of South and Southeast Asia, as well as the foreign policy of Spain and the EU towards these regions, with special focus on India.
