Albares travels next week to Egypt to discuss the situation in the Middle East

Eduardo González The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, will travel next week to Cairo to discuss the situation in the Middle East with his new Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, the situation in the Middle East, the Ministry reported this Friday in a press release. This is Albares' second visit to Cairo since his meeting in mid-March with the former Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry. Badr Abdelatty, meanwhile, travelled to the Spanish capital on 13 September for the 'Madrid Meeting: for the implementation of two States', in which the European Union, members of the Arab-Islamic Contact Group on Gaza and the European countries that have recognised the State of Palestine participated. During the visit, which will conclude on Thursday, Albares will highlight the constructive role played by Egypt in favour of peace in the Middle East and its dialogue with all actors in the region, including the efforts of the Abdel Fattah el Sisi government to negotiate a ceasefire agreement that would allow the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas and the massive entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. In this regard, Albares will highlight the historical importance of Egypt for having been the first Arab country to sign a peace agreement with Israel. The Foreign Minister also plans to convey to his new Egyptian counterpart Spain's solidarity with the situation in the country, caused by the forced displacement of the Palestinian population and which may have consequences for the region, the Ministry continued. During their first meeting with Abdelatty, coinciding with the aforementioned Meeting in Madrid, both ministers agreed to "continue working together for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza." Albares will also participate in the presentation ceremony of the UN Women project "Leadership of Egyptian women in the observance of Resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council," with the Ministers of Planning and Solidarity and Abdelatty himself. The project, which has funding of 400,000 euros, is carried out in collaboration with the National Council of Women, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding.
