Casa Mediterráneo’s July programme kicks off on the 1st with the screening of the Serbian comedy-drama Optimisti (2006), directed by Goran Paskaljevic. The session, in original version with Spanish subtitles, will begin this evening at 19:00 with free admission until full capacity is reached.

The film, a co-production of Serbia, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland, won the Golden Spike for Best Film and the Best Actor Award (Lazar Ristovski) at the 51st SEMINCI in Valladolid.

Optimisti’ is inspired by Voltaire’s Candide and is divided into five episodes. The action takes place in Serbia after the fall of Milosevic. In the first episode, an itinerant hypnotist who uses his powers to boost the confidence of the villagers arrives in a war-torn village. In the second, the owner of a prosperous foundry rapes the daughter of one of his workers. In the third, a young man squanders the money his uncle saved for his father’s funeral on gambling. In the fourth, a cardiologist visits a slaughterhouse owner to treat his violent son. And in the last, a con man drives a bus full of sick people seeking physical and spiritual healing.

Optimisti stars Lazar Ristovski, Bojana Novakovic, Petar Bozovic, Nebojsa Glogovac and Nebojsa Milovanovic in leading roles, with music by Aleksandar Simic and cinematography by Milan Spasic.
