The Diplomat
The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, stated yesterday before the main Spanish businessmen that the Executive is “carefully” studying the acquisition of 9.9 percent of the capital of Telefónica by the Saudi group STC, which makes it the majority shareholder of the Spanish company, and assured that the Government will protect national security “at all times.”
During an event at the CEOE headquarters, Pedro Sánchez described the operation as “good news” because it shows that Spain arouses the interest of large international investors. Likewise, and as the first vice president and acting minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, did previously, the head of the Executive wanted to convey a message of security and assured that “the Government has instruments to protect its national sovereignty and its strategic interests in particular in security and defense.” Therefore, he reiterated, national security will be safe “at all times.”
