On Monday 11 September at 8 p.m., the Instituto Francés in Madrid will be showing the film Vencer o morir (Vaincre ou mourir), directed by Vincent Mottez and Paul Mignot. The screening will be in the original version with Spanish subtitles.
Inspired by the historical events of the Vendée War in the 18th century, the film follows the charismatic military leader Charette. With spectacular battle scenes, it brings to light a forgotten part of French history.
1793. It is three years since Charette, a former Royal Navy officer, retired to his Vendée mansion. The hope of the French Revolution had given way to disillusionment and despair throughout the country. The peasants’ anger grows and they call on the young pensioner to take command of the brewing rebellion.
