The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) has activated this week the humanitarian emergency agreements it maintains with the NGOs Oxfam Intermon and Caritas, with a total mobilization of 652,558.03 euros, to respond to the humanitarian crises caused by the drought in Ethiopia and the conflicts in Sudan and Armenia.
With Oxfam Intermon, AECID will mobilize 247,838.63 euros to provide humanitarian assistance to populations displaced by the drought in Jarar, in the province of Somali (Ethiopia). The main objective is to ensure food security for a population of some 72,000 people who have been suffering from one of the most severe droughts in recent decades in the country.
This initiative includes the mass vaccination of the livestock of 12,000 families, the delivery of multipurpose cash transfers to 400 families, and awareness-raising and training sessions for women leaders, civil servants and service providers to protect the most vulnerable displaced population.
Oxfam Intermon will also use another 258,767 euros from its agreement with the Agency to support displaced populations in eastern Chad, on the border with Sudan. It will do so through CHAD’s NGO, Association Help Tchad, to provide an emergency response to the priority needs of the people affected by the Sudanese crisis. Specifically, the project is aimed at some 10,000 people, including 9,000 women and children and some 1,000 men.
AECID has also activated this week the agreement it maintains with the NGO Caritas for an amount of 145,952.40 euros to support the populations displaced by the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, in the Armenian provinces of Syunik and Vayots Dzor.
The initiative will help meet the basic needs, protection, resilience and emergency prevention needs of 3,658 households in the two communities, some 14,915 people in total. It will do so through the participation of Caritas Armenia, which will deliver cash to the 400 most vulnerable and/or emergency (health, disability or other complex situations) families.
The project also foresees the rehabilitation of community protection centers and the creation and training of emergency response volunteer groups, in collaboration with the Austrian Red Cross and the Armenian Red Cross.
